About Point Break Volleyball Club

What Is Point Break Volleyball Club?
Point Break Volleyball Club is a Youth Volleyball organization aimed at providing youths the opportunity to participate and develop in the sport of Volleyball, in a competitive atmosphere.

Point Break offers a unique competitive environment for young girls (ages 10-18) to participate and excel in the sport of volleyball. We provide professional coaching by coaches from many of the areas best scholastic programs. We currently offer teams in all age groups at the Power League and Area League levels. Point Break's season lasts from tryouts in early November all the way through the Volleyball Festival at the end of June. Practices generally include one week night plus one weekend night per week, with tournaments every other weekend on the average.

Point Break Volleyball Club is a member of the NCVA (Northern California Volleyball Association) region, governed by USA Volleyball.

Who Is Point Break Volleyball?
Point Break is made up of young, talented, and energetic coaches from all over the Southern Bay Area of California. We currently employ coaches from many of the area's High School programs, including: Westmont High School, Saratoga High School, Notre Dame-San Jose High School, Lincoln High School, Gunderson High School, Evergreen Valley High School, and Branham High School.

The Point Break family is always growing, and we're always looking for the area's best and brightest coaches to join the "Live Aloha" lifestyle!

What Are Power Leagues? Power Leagues are those leagues in which the competition is at its fiercest. Players from all over Northern California, Southern Oregon, and parts of Nevada come together to compete and hopefully qualify for a National Championship bid. The NCVA Power Leagues host some of the best teams in the country year in and year out. It is here that most players with aspirations of playing high level volleyball will meet. Power teams at Point Break practice 2 times per week, travel to at least two National Qualifiers on the West Coast, and participate in either the Junior Olympic Championships or the Volleyball Festival at the end of the season. Tournaments generally occur every other weekend. Drive times to Power League and Regional Tournaments are usually no longer than 2 hours. Power League teams are recommended for players who wish to play against the best players around, and be top Varsity players for their schools.

For a closer look at the Power League Schedule, check the Schedule page.

What Are Area Leagues? Area Leagues are competitive, but on a smaller scale than Power Leagues. Their name tells the story. There is less travel, less tournaments, and less pressure. Point Break hosts 3 Area League +Plus teams, two 16 and under teams and one 14 and under team. These teams travel to all the NCVA Area League tournaments, plus a few Regional Tournaments, and culminate at the California Finals in June. Area League +Plus is recommended for players who wish to play competitively, but may not aspire to be top Varsity players.

What Age Group Can My Daughter Play In?

USA Volleyball Age Definitions for 2009-2010:

  • 18 and Under: Born between Sept. 1, 1991 and August 31, 1992
  • 17 and Under: Born between Sept. 1, 1992 and August 31, 1993
  • 16 and Under: Born between Sept. 1, 1993 and August 31, 1994
  • 15 and Under: Born between Sept. 1, 1994 and August 31, 1995
  • 14 and Under: Born between Sept. 1, 1995 and August 31, 1996
  • 13 and Under: Born between Sept. 1, 1996 and August 31, 1997

Players may play in any division higher than their age group suggests. For instance, a 15 year player may wish to play on a 17 and Under team. This is fine, but a player may not play in any division lower than their age group suggests.

Point Break's History: In the Spring of 2002, the face of club volleyball in the South Bay was changing. Peter Kim, Head Coach of the Mountain View High School Girls and Boys Volleyball programs, and Club Director of the Lokahi Volleyball Club out of Mountain View, had decided to move on and became the new Head Coach of the Westmont High School Girls and Boys Volleyball programs. With it he took his volleyball club.

At the same time, Billy Fowler, Head Coach of the Saratoga High School Girls and Boys Volleyball programs, had recently inherited the Aloha Volleyball Club out of Saratoga and Los Gatos. Then, one evening in Mountain View, the Saratoga High School and Mountain View High School Boys Volleyball teams met in competition, and Peter Kim and Billy Fowler began discussing their future club plans. When all was said and done, the two had decided to combine the two clubs in to one new club, Point Break Volleyball Club.

In 2007, Point Break Volleyball Club begins it's 5th year of operation, and participation in the NCVA Girls Division. Over the years, Point Break has enjoyed an extremely encouraging growth, expanding in both the Power League and Area League divisions. In a climate where many clubs have seen contracting numbers, and many have had to fold, Point Break has only grown. As Point Break grows, so do its coaches. Most of Point Break's original coaches still coach here, and now hold Head Coaching positions at High Schools all over the South Bay.

In the future, Point Break looks to perhaps begin offering teams in the NCVA Boys Division as well, once again expanding. Who knows what the future holds as Point Break teams grow more competitive every year.
